At the spin of a wheel the romance of roulette in the movies
Love and luck are two of the most popular movie themes, and are ingredients that are more or less guaranteed to give any movie a fighting chance of box office success. Add the lure and mystique of a casino into the mix, and you could have all the makings of a blockbuster.
There are movies that feature card games, such as Casino Royale and The Sting, but theres something about the roulette wheel that truly captures the imagination. Part of it is the drama the size of the wheel, the release of the ball and the final moments as it bounces into its final slot. But there is also the simplicity of roulette that makes it so accessible. No complex strategy or card counting here, and we all have an equal chance.
Is it all down to chance?
Is that entirely true, though? The spin of a wheel is surely as random as the toss of a coin. But that hasnt stopped people publishing countless guides on how to succeed. Some of those tips are quite out there in terms of exploiting chaos theory and so on, but to get the genuine low down, Online Casino BlueBook has published this guide to roulette strategy odds that takes a scientific and mathematical approach, and is well worth a look.
Of course, that is all very well for us in the real world, but on the silver screen, we want to see the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, along with, perhaps, some underhand trickery to give Lady Luck a helping hand. Here are a few movies that do it better than most:
Casablanca
The staple of Christmases across the land, its hard to believe that generations have been watching Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, Claude Rains and the rest go through their moves for 70 years. The scene in Ricks casino is simply one of the most memorable in movie history. A novice is in desperate need of money, and has tried his luck in Ricks casino to get it. As he prepares to give up, Rick (Bogart) asks: Have you tried 22 tonight? and gives a knowing look to the croupier. The rest is history.
Run, Lola, Run
This 1998 German crime drama is well worth seeking out, but be prepared, it will leave you breathless. Lola has just 20 minutes to come up with 100,000 DEM (that would be about 50,000 today) to save her boyfriends life. This movie came up with the alternative plotlines idea before anyone had seen the same idea exploited in Sliding Doors, which came out the same year. Everything comes to a head at the roulette wheel.
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
Who says roulette cant be fun? This Steve Martin and Michael Caine classic is full of memorable moments and quotable lines. But the scene at the roulette table is one that stands out. The movie celebrates its 30th birthday this year, so why not watch it again there are few better 80s comedies.
