While not all of it works, and the stylistic concept isn't quite as novel as it was a few years ago, it's still a flashy step and bit of cool experimental filmmaking worthy of notice.

How The Gaming Industry Is Transforming Movies

How The Gaming Industry Is Transforming Movies

For years now, the gaming and movie industries have been working side by side to dominate the entertainment industry. Gone are the days of tree forts and heading out for bike rides just for something to do and instead, youre more likely to catch a child out catching augmented Pokmon than flying bugs. The gaming industry has revolutionised the way we spend our time, whether its hours spent giving casino games a try online, or breaking out the console to navigate a post-apocalyptic Fallout world, but we certainly havent forgotten how the power of cinema.

The big screen has been the heart and soul of entertainment for such a long time now that its only right that gaming has started to work with the industry rather than against it. Here, were exploring how the gaming industry is transforming movies as we know them.

Are Video Games Overtaking The Movie Industry?
The one question we have to ask ourselves before we begin is whether gaming is overtaking movies as a whole. Nowadays, we all have technology at our fingertips that can make playing, watching and creating games and movies as simple as a few taps on a screen and as a result, both industries have been growing exponentially as far as the independent market is concerned. However, one thing that is worth taking into account is the time in which we spend in either market. Think of your typical day you wake up, get ready to go to school or work and you set off. If you commute, you probably pull out your phone and do a bit of browsing and maybe indulge in a round of Crossy Road or two bonus points if you play it one handed while gripping onto a rail.

You work, maybe browse social media during lunch, hop back on a bus or a train home and try Doodle Jump or Candy Crush. Then, only once your home will you indulge in a movie or a series to help you unwind at the end of a long day. While the age of downloadable movie content is upon us, very few are willing to stop and start a movie throughout their commute could gaming be taking over?

Movies Once Influenced Games
There was a time where movies dominated over games, particularly by working their way into the industry itself. Leading movies were made into games on a regular basis, from Harry Potters full collection to James Bonds many spy adventures. Superheroes werent exempt from this either, with Legos Batman and Batman 2 offering a cartoon-esque adventure into Batmans villain-bashing world.

While we do still see app store games crafted in the image of movies, particularly when a popularity boom has been evident, its less common to see console or PC creations and instead, were seeing more and more movies being made in the image of games.

… And Now The Tides Are Turning
Every year, were seeing more and more movies being produced that are either directly copied from our favourite games, or heavily influenced by them. Just this year weve seen a remake of Tomb Raider and the release of Rampage based off of the video game series by Midway Games. Weve even had announcements for Minecraft, The Angry Birds Movie 2, Detective Pikachu and Sonic The Hedgehog all due to be released in 2019.

The movie industry is becoming increasingly saturated not only with movie versions of leading games, but films that feature gaming heavily as their main theme. Ready Player One has been one of 2018s biggest movies so far, and were all eagerly awaiting Wreck-It Ralph 2 after the original had us all feeling something for the bad guys. While there have been some movies of questionable quality, gaming has certainly provided the film industry with some box office hits.

The tides may have turned when it comes to the gaming and movie industries, but were confident that regardless of whether movies are influencing gaming, or the opposite is truly taking over, both can certainly benefit from the interest. What do you think?

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Writer Reveals Shocking Original Ending

TV – We Got This Covered
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Writer Reveals Shocking Original Ending

Star Trek has impressively managed to hold together a united continuity over the past 50 years – even the rebooted modern movie franchise was good enough to make clear that it was set in a connected separate timeline – but this could’ve been swallowed up by a massive black hole if Star Trek: Deep Space Nine had ended as originally planned.

DS9, the third live-action series in the franchise which ran from 1993 to 1999, came to a close with the two-part “What You Leave Behind” at the end of its seventh season. It wrapped up the ongoing storyline of the Federation’s war with the Cardassians in a satisfying way, but showrunner Ira Steven Behr initially wanted to end it on a left-field twist that would’ve definitely left Trek fans with their jaws on the floor.

Behr described his plan for the ending while speaking at the Star Trek Las Vegas convention, saying that it would’ve tied back to season 6 episode “Far Beyond the Stars” by reintroducing Captain Sisko’s alter ego Benny Russell, and revealing that the whole show was a fiction.

“I did pitch to [executive producer] Rick Berman that the final episode would end up with Benny Russell on Stage 17 at Paramount, wandering around the soundstages, realizing that this whole construct, this whole series, that we had done for seven years, was just in Benny’s head.”

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

Obviously, this would’ve raised a lot of questions about the reality of the entire Trek universe, which is why Berman ultimately nixed the idea. Something that fans are no doubt pleased about.

“That is how I wanted to end the series. And Rick said ‘Does this mean The Original Series was in Benny’s head? Does this mean Voyager was in Benny’s head?’ I said ‘Hey man, I don’t care who is dreaming those shows, I only care about Deep Space Nine and yes, Benny Russell is dreaming Deep Space Nine.’ He didn’t go for it.”

“Far Beyond the Stars” is actually a smart metafictional episode in which it’s teased that the show is dreamed up by a sci-fi writer from the 1950s. The concept worked in the context of that installment, but “it was all a dream” endings are rarely satisfying, so it’s probably for the best that Behr didn’t get to pull the rug from under the audience in the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine finale like he’d hoped to.

New Avengers 4 Theory Says Ant-Man’s The Key To Doctor Strange’s Plan

We Got This Covered
New Avengers 4 Theory Says Ant-Man’s The Key To Doctor Strange’s Plan

What was Doctor Strange thinking in Avengers: Infinity War? It’s a question that’s arisen time and time again in fan forums as viewers draw on their best detective skills to predict how the Sorcerer Supreme’s long-term vision will come to fruition in next year’s Avengers 4. Just take this recent theory on Reddit for example, which observes Strange’s unusual choice to surrender the Time Stone to Thanos, and connects this to the post-credits twist of Ant-Man and the Wasp.

As with most Stephen Strange theories in the wake of Infinity War, this one all comes back to the part where Benedict Cumberbatch’s character looks forward in time to the millions of possible futures and concludes that just one sees them come out victorious in the fight against the Mad Titan.

With this curious scene in mind, it’s generally assumed that Strange’s seeming moment of weakness against Thanos was actually part of his mysterious strategy to realize this one favorable future. But if he intended to give the intergalactic tyrant the Time Stone all along, why didn’t he do so earlier? Why expend the energy battling the purple despot if he knew that this is how their exchange would end?

Redditor Trullius acknowledges a previous theory which argues that the doctor was playing for time, allowing Thor to attain the mighty Stormbreaker axe in order to slay Thanos – or not, as it sadly turned out. Trullius, however, offers the alternative notion that it wasn’t Thor whom Strange was counting on, but rather one Scott Lang, which brings us to that Ant-Man and the Wasp cliffhanger.

In the latest MCU movie’s post-credits scene, Scott ventures into the Quantum Realm only to find himself trapped there after his friends in the normal world are turned into dust as a result of Thanos’ snap. Though this leaves Ant-Man in a pretty awkward position, it remains a hugely popular prediction that the Quantum Realm will play a major role in the eventual defeat of the Avengers’ greatest enemy. Apparently, Doctor Strange could be thinking the same thing, since according to Trullius, his delayed surrender of the stone was an attempt to time the genocidal finger-snap with Scott’s entry into the Realm.

So, why is it advantageous for Scott to be in the Quantum Realm at the time of the snap? The Reddit theory doesn’t get that far in its speculation, though the Russo Brothers have already shot down the notion that being in this zone protected Ant-Man from the effects of Thanos’ snap, attributing his survival instead to dumb luck.

In any case, this theory seems to line up pretty well with what know and believe already about next year’s film. But whatever future the Russos have mapped out for Stephen, Scott, and the rest of the partially dusted superhero ensemble, you can be sure that these various multi-movie plot strands are going to find some way of coming together when Avengers 4 hits theaters on May 3rd, 2019, and the results are going to be universe-changing.
